It was successfully deployed during Euro 2024. The recent UEFA European Football Championship took place without any significant public order issues. The event’s flawless organization ensured maximum security for teams, delegations, UEFA staff, supporters and tourists, journalists, local residents, and law enforcement personnel across the many cities hosting the matches. Part of this success can be attributed to Pilomat, the Italian company that provided several temporary traffic deterrence devices used in urban centers and near stadiums to restrict vehicle access in controlled zones. These included the RBM Road Blocker Mobile models, which are innovative solutions that require no ground anchoring. The RBM mobile road blockers were deployed in Stuttgart during match days. In the morning the RBMs were lowered, allowing authorized vehicles (such as those belonging to residents, transport services, and businesses) to access the secured areas. The blockers were raised in the afternoon, closing the access and restricting entry to pedestrians, bicycles, and emergency vehicles only. The Pilomat Road Blockers Mobile proved to be the ideal solution for securing squares and areas dedicated to temporary events with significant foot traffic. RBM units are simply placed on the ground, allowing safe passage for pedestrians, individuals with mobility aids or wheelchairs, and vehicles when the blocker is lowered. When the mobile blocking element is raised, vehicle access is prevented. Despite being the smallest configuration of its kind currently on the market, the robust structure of the RBM and its anchoring system prevent it from being moved from its installation point, even when pushed by a vehicle. This makes it possible to secure access points without requiring constant supervision. With Road Blocker Mobile, Pilomat aimed to ensure maximum security with the smallest modular configuration. Among the many crash tests performed, the one for ISO 22343-1:2023 certification best highlights RBM’s exceptional resistance features. Our road blocker was tested in a configuration consisting of two side modules with mobile blocking elements and one central pedestrian module. It successfully stopped a 7.5-ton truck moving at 50 km/h. This is a benchmark result for the safety and resilience of public spaces. Versatile and Modular Access Control To address this challenge, Pilomat designed and installed three different types of bollards, each with specific characteristics tailored to the functional and security needs of the project: The new Road Blocker Mobile RBM by Pilomat is designed to temporarily protect streets, squares, and outdoor event areas. It features a raised, drive-over platform with ramps on both ends and a central mobile blocking element that can be manually raised or lowered as needed to allow or prevent vehicle access. The modular system allows multiple modules with mobile blocking elements to be connected, forming barriers of any desired length. It also supports the addition of blind pedestrian modules, offering a versatile and customizable concept that can also integrate with Oktablock. Easily installable on any road or pedestrian surface, each module can be assembled in just 20 minutes without the need for civil works. The Need: Protection and Design for the Heart of Milan Milan's historic city center required an advanced security system to protect against potential vehicular threats without compromising the beauty of its squares and historic streets. The objective was to safeguard strategic pedestrian areas from potentially dangerous vehicles, with solutions that seamlessly blend into the urban context. Pilomat's Solution: Custom Bollards for Milan To address this challenge, Pilomat designed and installed three different types of bollards, each with specific characteristics tailored to the functional and security needs of the project: Automatic bollards model 275/K4-900A: These bollards, equipped with automatic raising and lowering mechanisms, were installed in areas requiring selective vehicle access control, such as for emergency and service vehicles. They provide total protection while in use without compromising mobility when needed. Fixed bollards model 275/K4FB-900F: These robust and permanent bollards were placed at critical access points to prevent any unauthorized passage. Their anti-intrusion structure offers maximum security with high impact resistance, ideal for ensuring continuous protection of sensitive pedestrian areas. Removable bollards model 275/K4SF-900RM: A key element of the project, these removable bollards were redesigned to feature a lower installation profile. Despite their ease of use and removal, they maintain the same high impact resistance as anti-terrorism products, ensuring the same reliability as fixed or automatic bollards. Certified Safety Testing Following the design modifications for the removable bollards, Pilomat subjected the 275/K4SF-900RM model to a crash tests in certified laboratory. These tests verified the bollards' ability to withstand high impacts, confirming their compliance with international anti-terrorism standards. Thanks to these tests, the reliability and safety of the product were ensured, even in critical situations. Unique Design Features: Stone Cladding and Milan Map In addition to their advanced technology and structural strength, all Milomat bollards were designed with particular attention to aesthetics. Each bollard is clad in natural stone, allowing them to seamlessly blend into Milan's historic architecture. Road Blocker Mobile is in fact not only certified IWA 14-1:2013 and DIN SPEC 91414-1-2021 but also has the highest handling level ever tested for products of this kind: MK2.
